IL questions the Government about the safety and protection of the Portuguese in Angola

The Portuguese government has been questioned about the security situation in Luanda and the protection of the Portuguese community in Angola, following a day marked by acts of vandalism, looting, and violence. The Angolan National Police reported a provisional toll of four dead and over 500 arrests after the strike called by taxi drivers in Luanda.

Highlighting the historical instability in the region and the significant presence of the Portuguese diaspora in Angola, the Liberals argue that it is essential for the Portuguese state to be vigilant and prepared to respond to any deterioration in security conditions.

The IL is seeking to understand the current assessment of the Portuguese government on the security situation in Luanda, especially regarding Portuguese citizens residing there or visiting, as well as the staff of Portugal’s diplomatic and consular missions.

Liberals are also questioning the measures being implemented by Portuguese authorities on the ground to ensure the protection of the Portuguese community in Angola, specifically concerning communication, travel, and potential support requests.

Further clarification from the Foreign Minister is sought on the contacts made with Angolan authorities and European partners regarding this situation.

They additionally inquire whether the Portuguese Embassy in Luanda currently has an updated evacuation and emergency response plan, the date of the last revision, and the communication procedures planned for emergencies.

Concerns of the party led by Mariana Leitão also extend to the impact on Portuguese economic interests in Angola, questioning what monitoring measures are being taken in this regard.

The Angolan National Police reported a provisional toll of four dead and over 500 arrests following a strike called by taxi drivers in Luanda, characterized by acts of vandalism, looting, and violence.

The spokesman for the National Police, Sub-Commissioner Mateus Rodrigues, informed the media that the public security situation in the Angolan capital is stable, noting that 45 stores, 25 private vehicles, 20 public buses, and three bank branches were vandalized.

“We are witnessing a return to normality, thanks to the work done yesterday [Monday] during the afternoon and evening,” stated Mateus Rodrigues, emphasizing the reopening of major roads – where vandalism acts occurred – in the last 24 hours and the removal of obstacles placed on the roads, hindering free movement of people.
