Woman wanted for 122 crimes in Portugal ‘caught’ in Spain

A 56-year-old woman, subject to a European arrest warrant issued by Portuguese authorities, was detained by the Spanish National Police in Elche, Alicante. The suspect faces charges for over 122 counts of document forgery.

Her arrest followed her appearance at a police station in the Spanish city to renew her documentation.

Police officials subsequently alerted the Judicial Police, as the woman had been under a valid arrest warrant in Portugal since 2015.

The investigation began in 2006, with the woman suspected of continuously converting third-country driver’s licenses into Portuguese licenses without meeting legal requirements.

She was also involved in irregularly obtaining Portuguese residence permits by forging extension visas or residence authorizations. Additionally, she acquired residence certificates or medical certificates for vehicle drivers based on false statements and previously forged documents.

Facing a sentence of seven and a half years in prison, the woman has been charged with more than 122 crimes. She is now under the jurisdiction of the Central Court of Instruction of the National Court, which will oversee extradition proceedings.
