Mariana Mortágua, the coordinator of the Left Bloc, advocated on Wednesday for the “recognition [of the State of Palestine] and immediate sanctions against Israel” after Portugal signed a joint declaration with 15 countries in favor of recognizing the State of Palestine.
“The Portuguese government signs a declaration stating that the recognition of the State of Palestine is essential, but it does not recognize it. When Israel condemns thousands of children to death by starvation, what is it waiting for? Trump’s orders? Immediate recognition and sanctions against Israel,” she wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
On Wednesday, Portugal admitted to considering recognizing the State of Palestine and committed to working on the “next day” in Gaza, as stated in a declaration signed by 15 countries at a United Nations conference on the two-state solution.
Representing Europe, Andorra, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Slovenia, and Spain signed the declaration. Among these countries, Spain, Ireland, Norway, and Slovenia recognized the Palestinian state last year.

Last Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron revealed that France would also recognize the State of Palestine in September.
It is noted that Israel opposes the international recognition of the Palestinian state, and the current government has threatened to annex West Bank territories if powers like the UK and France proceed with such recognition.
Among European countries, Slovenia, Spain, Ireland, and Norway led the way in recognizing the Palestinian state in 2024.
In a “joint statement” released in May, these four countries called for worldwide recognition and advocated for Palestine’s entry into the United Nations as a full member, along with support for an agreement between the parties, with mutual recognition between Palestine and Israel.
