The resume of the new governor of BdP is “sufficiently solid”

“Obviously, neither BCP nor any of my colleagues will comment. It is not our role. The only thing [I can speak about] is the resume of the appointed governor, which speaks for itself. It requires no further elaboration, it is sufficiently solid,” stated Miguel Maya, responding to journalists in Oeiras, Lisbon, following the presentation of the bank’s results.

Last Thursday, after confirming Centeno’s non-renewal and announcing the selection of Álvaro Santos Pereira, the Minister of the Presidency, António Leitão Amaro, remarked it was a “better choice” than retaining the former Finance Minister and praised Santos Pereira for his “political independence,” contrasting his governmental experience from a decade ago with Centeno’s direct transition from Finance Minister to governor.

Centeno’s mandate concluded on July 19, but Luís Montenegro’s executive only announced the successor after this date.

The PSD and CDS praised the choice of the new governor. Chega considered it an independent name. IL expressed doubts. The PS attributed the non-renewal to political reasons. BE criticized the choice for being close to the government. Livre, PCP, and PAN opposed selecting a former ‘troika’ period official.

Regarding the future headquarters of BdP in Entrecampos, with an estimated investment of 192 million euros, Miguel Maya noted that BCP is “completely uninvolved,” and he expressed clarity with the information provided by Governor Mário Centeno.

“It doesn’t deserve two minutes of attention. I am fully clarified,” he insisted.
