After shopping, the bills: Which foods got more expensive this week

The latest DECO PROTeste analysis of the food basket, covering the period from July 23 to July 30, indicates that essential foods have generally become cheaper.

While the previous analysis reported that the overall price of the 63 essential products was 239.95 euros, the most recent review reveals that, as of July 30, this group of products cost 239.65 euros, representing a 30-cent reduction.

This may not seem like a significant difference, but it’s important to remember that last week the price of this basket dropped by nearly six euros after successive increases. This month, these 60 or so items reached the most expensive value of 2022.

However, regarding last week’s data, more details can be provided. In addition to this slight decrease, there is an analysis of the foods that increased the most in price.

The findings by consumer protection specialists highlight the ‘top 10’ foods with the most significant price increase.

The food that saw the highest increase is cauliflower, followed by fiber cereals and, in third place, broccoli. While the top two foods increased by approximately 13%, the price of broccoli rose by around 12%.

This list of foods that have become more expensive also includes salmon, fresh hake, pointed cabbage, spaghetti, mackerel, black swordfish, and Gala apples.

In their analysis, the specialists also highlight which foods saw the largest price increase over a year, with roasted coffee performing poorly for its fans, as the price of this product rose by about 40% from July 31, 2022, to July 30 of this year.
