Media Capital announced on Thursday that it has acquired “98.21% of the company Newsplex,” which owns the publications Nascer do Sol and Jornal I, with the purchase price amounting to one euro.
In information sent to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM), Media Capital stated that it “today entered into a share purchase agreement,” acquiring “a representative holding of 98.21% of the company Newsplex, S.A.”
“The purchase price of the said shareholding in Newsplex, S.A. amounts to EUR 1.00, with Media Capital assuming the company’s responsibilities to the Tax Authority and Social Security,” the statement reads.
Newsplex, it should be noted, is a “company operating in the print media sector, holding the publications Nascer do Sol and Jornal I.”
Mário Ramires, founder of the two newspapers, will “take on the general management” of the two publications.
The confirmation comes after Media Capital had informed on July 17 about the existence of talks between the group that owns TVI and CNN Portugal and the venture capital company that controls Newsplex.
On Tuesday, Jornal I had its last edition as a newspaper, transitioning to a magazine format. “It will be revamped, will have a new life in magazine format along with Nascer do Sol, with new owners and a new direction which, I’m sure, will give it a new course,” revealed the then-director Nuno Tiago Pinto.

According to data on the Transparency Portal of the Media Regulatory Authority (ERC), Newsplex was owned by Sunny Media, Unipessoal Lda, by 98.21%, and the remaining 1.79% belongs to Barod Ltd.
Sunny Media is controlled by the Alpac Alpac Capital España ETVE fund, which is in turn owned by Alpac DWC LLC. Alpac DWC has shareholders Pedro Vargas Santos David, with 66.67%, and the remaining 33.33% is held by Luís Santos.
The Alpac Capital fund acquired the majority stake in Euronews and purchased the titles Nascer do Sol and Jornal I in July 2022.
