According to the regional command of Emergency and Civil Protection in Leiria, resources were dispatched to the scene following an accident that occurred on the south-north stretch of the A13 motorway at kilometer 180 after the Avelar junction, located in the district of Leiria, though the actual site is in the Coimbra district.
“It was a collision between two articulated lorries carrying goods, with one completely blocking the road. The accident resulted in one fatality and another person seriously injured,” the source stated.
The section of the motorway between the Avelar junction, accessible from the IC8, and the Penela junction is currently closed in both directions. Water is being distributed to motorists stranded on the motorway due to the accident.
With the closure of the A13, traffic is being redirected to the IC3 from Penela to Avelar.
The alert was raised at 12:54 p.m., and 19 responders are on-site, supported by nine vehicles from voluntary firefighters in Ansião, the National Republican Guard (GNR), the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM), and the A13’s concessionaire company.
