Where do political leaders go on vacation (and what do they pack)?

In the year of municipal elections and with the Portuguese Parliament already in recess, the schedules of Portugal’s leading politicians shrink in August as they go on vacation, as stated by press offices.

In his last summer as President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, is on holiday in “mid-August,” choosing Monte Gordo in the Algarve as his destination.

Also in the Algarve until mid-August is the second figure of the State, the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, who will be with his family, yet “keeping his schedule open if necessary.”

The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, has also opted for the Algarve, planning to go “during a few days yet to be defined in August.” It is also in the Algarve area of Quarteira where the Festa do Pontal takes place on August 14.

Montenegro will give a speech at this traditional PSD event in Calçadão de Quarteira, Loulé, which will feature a performance by musician Toy.

The leader of Chega, André Ventura, will also spend time in the Algarve during the early weeks of this month.

José Luís Carneiro, recently elected secretary-general of the PS, will also head to the Algarve in the first week before heading to the Azores from August 16 to 20.

Lusa inquired about the ‘podcasts’ politicians plan to listen to on their holidays, to which the socialist leader responded that he “will be without technology” and plans to spend his days swimming, walking, and reading.

Another first-timer in her role during holidays is Mariana Leitão, the new head of the IL, who will visit the Algarve in the last week of this month, coinciding with the party’s return on August 30.

Her agenda includes watching the second season of “Wednesday” with her daughters and finishing “House of Cards,” as well as reading “A Civilização do Espetáculo” by Mario Vargas Llosa.

Rui Tavares, spokesperson for Livre, will start by “regaining strength with his family” in his village in Ribatejo and “will later spend a few beach days.”

Focusing more on summer reading, Tavares also plans to listen to the Latin podcast “satura lanx.”

From the PCP, Secretary-General Paulo Raimundo has already headed to interior northern Portugal, where he will stay with his family until mid-August.

The CDS-PP President and Minister of National Defense, Nuno Melo, will spend a dozen days with his family in the North at the end of this month.

Melo admits he is a fan of historical podcasts, highlighting “Histórias da História” by Observador.

The sole deputy and coordinator of the BE, Mariana Mortágua, will rest in Alentejo in mid-August, returning to political activities during the party’s return at the end of the month.

The lone deputy of PAN, Inês de Sousa Real, will take her vacation two weeks after wrapping up the submission of municipal election lists, spending time at the family’s place on the Alentejo Coast.

The PAN spokesperson listens to several podcasts, including “Homem que mordeu o cão” by Nuno Markl, “Isso não se diz” by Bruno Nogueira, “Prova Oral” by Nuno Alvim, or “Mixórdia de temáticas” by Ricardo Araújo Pereira and “Dona da Casa” by Catarina Marques Rodrigues.

A national political newcomer, JPP’s sole deputy, Filipe Sousa, considers himself not fond of “formal vacations, with marked destinations and suitcases ready,” and intends to “recharge by spending time with family and enjoying the hidden charms” of Madeira, which “is no less than a paradise.”

“I would say that I will enjoy the silence of the parliamentary corridors to internalize this new phase at the Assembly of the Republic and prepare for a stronger comeback. Small escapades might happen, but the focus remains – politics doesn’t take a break,” he added.
