The Leiria Health Unit has reported that 44 children and 26 adults have been examined following an incident at Nazaré Beach.
“On this second day, there is a lower influx to the emergency services due to symptoms like vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea,” stated the Leiria Health Unit in a communication.
Those contacted reported improvements in their initial symptoms.
The records are still being finalized, and the Public Health Unit of the Leiria Region continues verifying the identified cases.
By late morning, there were 50 recorded cases, including 28 children and 22 adults.
Nazaré Beach was closed to swimming on Friday after a technical failure caused a discharge into the storm sewers, leading to foul smells.
Nazaré’s Mayor, Manuel Sequeira, expressed confidence that the issue has been resolved.
The health delegate submitted a water sample for analysis to the Ricardo Jorge Institute on Friday, with results expected by the end of the day. Normal operations at the beach are anticipated to resume by Sunday.
“We believe the beach is currently in good condition, but it can only be reopened after confirming favorable test results,” said Nazaré’s mayor.
All relevant organizations are coordinating efforts, and normal beach activities will resume once conditions are confirmed safe.
The Nazaré City Council explained that a recent technical occurrence in the storm drainage system led to an unusual discharge accompanied by foul odors near the coastline.
