“Clean and transparent water.” Nazaré Beach reopened for swimming.

The Nazaré City Council announced that, following an inspection this afternoon, it has been confirmed that the seawater is currently clear and transparent, without signs of macroscopic organic constituents.

The Central Regional Health Delegation, cited in the municipality’s statement, reported that due to the results of Friday’s water analysis and the “downward trend” in the use of health services by “patients with gastrointestinal symptoms,” the ban on swimming at the beach has been lifted.

The Leiria Regional Local Health Unit (ULS) attended to 70 individuals by 5:00 PM today, who exhibited symptoms linked to the contamination observed in the water at Nazaré beach on Friday.

According to the updated information from the ULS, with assessments conducted by the Public Health Unit, 44 children and 26 adults were observed.

“On this second day, there is a reduced influx to emergency services for cases with symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea,” reported the ULS of the Leiria Region in a statement sent to the Lusa news agency.

The same source indicated that “patients contacted reported improvements in initial symptoms.”

“The records are not yet fully completed, and the Public Health Unit of the ULS of the Leiria Region continues to work on verifying all identified cases,” the organization added in the same note.

By late morning, there were 50 recorded cases, including 28 children and 22 adults.

The beach at Nazaré was closed to swimming on Friday following a technical failure that led to a discharge into storm drains and unpleasant odors.
