Immigrants rush to professional training in Portugal for visa and legalization

Discussions in social media have proliferated concerning strategies to navigate the anticipated legislative changes, advising potential immigrants to Portugal to enroll in a vocational training course lasting more than 13 months within the country.

The Immigration Law allows students to apply for a residence permit in Portugal on the grounds of education, highlighted by a representative from a company involved in the process.

This option is viable for individuals wishing to move to Portugal and for those already residing in the country irregularly. They can apply for a residency permit by enrolling in a school offering these courses.

Prepara Portugal, a vocational training center, has reported a more than 100% increase in enrollments over the past three months, rising from 58 to 195 new students per month, according to Higor Cerqueira, the founder and pedagogic director of the institution.

“Since discussions about the new law began, we have noticed an even more significant growth in interest in our courses. We receive dozens of inquiries daily through our channels (phone, WhatsApp, email, and social media) from people seeking information about enrollment,” stated Cerqueira.

Founded by immigrants in Portugal and primarily catering to this demographic, the center offers vocational training programs lasting 18 months, with an average cost of one thousand euros. Students from 28 nationalities are enrolled, with Brazilians comprising 75% of the attendees, followed by Moroccans and Angolans. Courses are taught in Portuguese, with options available in English and French.

According to Cerqueira, these students seek specialized training in less labor-intensive fields than their usual work, such as the hospitality industry, to gain an advantage when searching for jobs.

The most popular study areas include data analysis and information technology for management, digital marketing, and strategic planning, with nine instructors for the student body.

Prepara Portugal, certified by the Direção Geral do Emprego e das Relações de Trabalho (DGERT), offers courses exceeding 13 months in length, attracting foreigners aspiring to immigrate to Portugal and those in irregular situations who can apply for residency as students.

“Our trainees can register in person or via WhatsApp. Many enroll while still in Brazil. Since our training is certified, they fulfill the criteria to apply for a visa,” Cerqueira explained.

Cerqueira acknowledges this is “a path to obtaining the visa” but emphasizes the significance of these immigrant communities obtaining valuable training when seeking or improving employment opportunities.

He assured that students attend the courses regularly and that AIMA ensures compliance by requesting proof of attendance whenever necessary.

An inquiry to AIMA regarding the use of these courses as a gateway to Portugal and the supervision of student participation was made, but no timely response was received.
