Data updated daily on the website of the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES) indicates that by the end of Sunday, 47,796 students had submitted applications.
Last year, 58,641 students applied for higher education, 10,845 more than the registrations recorded so far for the 2025/2026 academic year.
Compared to the previous year, on the penultimate day before the deadline, the number of applications was also higher: 56,170, which is 8,374 more than those received by DGES by Sunday.
The first phase of the national competition for access to higher education began two weeks ago, offering nearly 56,000 places for more than a thousand courses at public universities and polytechnic institutes.
With 18 entities and 27 senior directors among the services of the non-higher education system as well as higher education, science, and innovation, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation will be reduced to seven entities and 27 senior directors, with the integration of the dissolved entities into new ones.

For the coming academic year, universities and polytechnic institutes have made 55,956 seats available (an increase of 643 compared to last year) through the general access regime, which includes the national competition and local competitions, designated for art courses, for instance.
Students will have over 1,100 options to choose from across 34 higher education institutions.
The results will be announced on August 24, and candidates placed in the first phase will have until August 28 to enroll.
The second phase will take place from August 25 to September 3, with results announced on September 14, followed by the third phase from September 23 to 25, whose results will be known on October 1.
