The red alert, the highest on a scale of three, is due to the persistence of extremely high maximum temperatures, except in the coastal strip, according to IPMA.
The red alerts for the northern districts have been in effect since 12:00 PM on Monday and will last until 6:00 PM today.
From that time, Braga and Porto, along with Viana do Castelo, will transition to a yellow alert due to “the persistence of high maximum temperatures inside the district,” while Bragança and Vila Real will remain under an orange alert, the second most severe, due to their very high maximum temperatures.
IPMA has issued an orange alert today for five more northern districts, with Aveiro and Coimbra moving to a yellow alert in the afternoon, while Guarda and Viseu remain under the orange alert.
The remaining districts in the mainland, except Faro, which has no alerts, are under a yellow alert due to persistent high maximum temperatures. This alert will last throughout the day, except in the districts of Leiria, Lisbon, and Setúbal, which will have no alerts after 6:00 PM today.

The country is experiencing a heatwave, expected to last until Thursday, August 6. The Directorate-General for Health has shared “important recommendations” for the population to consider over the coming days.
