The Municipal Water and Sanitation Services (SMAS) of Almada, in the district of Setúbal, have announced that a team is currently working to repair a water main break. “It is still not possible to predict when the work will be completed and the water supply will be restored in the affected area,” stated SMAS on their website.
SMAS has requested understanding for the inconvenience caused and offers assistance for any difficulties via telephone at 800 205 712 Piquete — Avarias e Roturas.
Due to this rupture, traffic on the Itinerário Complementar (IC) 20 is restricted at kilometer six, in the direction of Caparica-Almada, as reported by the Autoestradas do Baixo Tejo sub-concession.
This marks the second rupture since Sunday, reported by SMAS, affecting Costa de Caparica.
Last Sunday, another major break occurred in a supply pipeline, impacting the areas of Raposo, Lazarim, Costa de Caparica, and Monte de Caparica.
In a communication shared today on social media, SMAS confirmed that the water supply issues experienced over the weekend have been resolved.
However, SMAS cautioned that “the exceptionally high water consumption, which has persisted over the past days, may occasionally cause reductions in pressure or sporadic supply disruptions.”
The interruptions in water supply have sparked criticism on social media from residents affected by the situation since Sunday.
Meanwhile, the IL of Almada has criticized the limited information provided by SMAS and the Municipal Council to the residents, highlighting another unannounced cutoff on Monday and a “complete lack of support for the affected population.”
“It is unacceptable that, in the height of summer and with Costa da Caparica receiving tens of thousands of people, the municipality fails to ensure the continuity of a basic and essential service like water supply. It is unacceptable for SMAS to hide, for the Mayor to remain silent, and for the political parties supporting or opposing the current majority to collectively renounce their political and institutional responsibility,” stated the IL.
