The Municipal Water and Sanitation Services (SMAS) of Almada announced that the repair work near the Capuchos area has been completed, and water supply restoration will be phased, meaning it will reach residents’ taps at different times.
An online notification from SMAS of Almada assures that teams will continue to monitor the situation’s development.
“Expressing regret for the inconvenience caused, SMAS of Almada reaffirms their commitment to enhancing the response capability to ensure greater stability in the water supply for the municipality,” stated SMAS in a note to Lusa news agency.
Consequent to the rupture, traffic on Itinerário Complementar (IC) 20 has been restricted at kilometer six in the Caparica-Almada direction, as noted by the Autoestradas do Baixo Tejo sub-concession.
This marks the second rupture since Sunday reported by SMAS, affecting the Costa de Caparica area.
On Sunday, another major rupture in a main pipeline disrupted supply to the areas of Raposo, Lazarim, Costa de Caparica, and Monte de Caparica, according to SMAS.
In a social media update today, SMAS indicated that the disruptions over the weekend have been resolved.
However, SMAS warns that the exceptionally high water consumption in recent days may occasionally lead to reduced pressure or temporary supply issues.
The water supply interruptions have sparked criticism on social media from residents in Almada, Setúbal district, affected since Sunday.
The Liberal Initiative (IL) of Almada has criticized the limited information provided to residents by SMAS and the Municipal Council, noting another outage on Monday without any official communication or support for the affected population.
“It is unacceptable that in the height of summer, with Costa da Caparica hosting tens of thousands, the municipality cannot maintain a basic and essential service like water supply. It is unacceptable for SMAS to hide, for the mayor to remain silent, and for the political parties, whether supporting or opposing the current majority, to collectively shirk their political and institutional responsibilities,” emphasized the IL.
