MAI promises reinforcement of resources and improvement of PSP and GNR infrastructures

“It is a commitment made by the Government’s Program, already debated in the Assembly of the Republic, which translates into a very firm reinforcement of working conditions and necessary resources,” stated the minister on the sidelines of the 158th anniversary celebrations of the Porto Metropolitan Command of the PSP, in Vila do Conde.

Maria Lúcia Amaral emphasized the maintenance of stations, headquarters, and vehicles “as a priority for the Government to ensure,” noting that concrete measures have already been taken in this regard.

“During my mandate, which began very recently, dozens of vehicles have already been delivered both to the PSP and the GNR, in fulfillment of this principle. And this principle will continue,” she assured.

The official spoke shortly after the speech of the Porto Metropolitan Command’s commander of the PSP, Vítor Rodrigues, who warned about the shortage of personnel and the aging police force in the metropolitan area.

“The Porto Metropolitan Command is deficient at all hierarchical levels,” stated the official, highlighting “that the average age is currently 47 years.”

“In such a demanding service, with enormous physical and psychological wear, this leads to a reduction in levels of operational capacity,” referred the commander, adding that augmenting personnel is essential to maintain the quality of the service provided.

“Safety is a key factor in maintaining the economic and social dynamism of the Porto metropolitan area. Without an increase in the number of personnel, it will be challenging to maintain the quality of the service we provide to the population,” he stated.

Vítor Rodrigues also urged the minister to urgently proceed with the works at the Bela Vista Barracks in Campanhã, pointing out that the promise to upgrade the space “has existed for over 20 years.”

According to the commander, the current conditions of the barracks do not meet the demands of the police mission, nor the respect due to PSP professionals.

The ceremony in Vila do Conde was attended by PSP leaders, representatives from various civil and military entities, and included tributes and recognitions to members of the security force for their performance and careers.
