Capture of Japanese clam in Sado prohibited from Friday

In the inland and non-maritime waters of the Sado River, as well as in the riverbeds and banks belonging to the public water domain under the jurisdiction of the Setúbal Port Captaincy, the capture, maintenance on board, landing, transport, possession, and sale of Japanese clams (‘Venerupis philippinarum’) is prohibited, according to a directive by the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services (DGRM).

Effective from Friday, the directive cites the low abundance and age structure of the Japanese clam population in the Sado estuary as reasons for the decision.

The DGRM is a central service of the direct state administration, with administrative autonomy, tasked with the development of maritime safety and services, the implementation of fisheries policies, and the preservation of resources.
