A man was reported missing by two friends who accompanied him but did not reunite with him onshore at the arranged time. Authorities deployed a search operation today, conducting underwater and land searches, supported by a drone, but the spear fisherman could not be found, stated Hugo da Guia, port captain of Lagos.
The port captain indicated that the search focused on the area where the diver’s buoy was found and extended up to 1,000 meters south of this location.
“Underwater searches were carried out, with a drone, by land, and with a boat,” highlighted the Algarve port captain.
The search involved a boat with two crew members from the Sagres Lifeboat Station, five members from the Algarve Firefighters’ Aquatic Rescue Intervention Unit (UNISA), three Maritime Police agents, and three members from the Aljezur Volunteer Firefighters, he detailed.
Hugo da Guia informed that the operation also included “a person trained in freediving familiar with the area, who also participated in the search.”
On Friday morning, authorities plan to “resume underwater searches with the support of a boat” and use a drone to “particularly during low tide, around 09:00, scan the coastline” to detect any “possible wash-up,” he anticipated.
It’s a scenario that “is not expected,” but “cannot be ruled out,” justified Hugo da Guia, who anticipates “more favorable” weather conditions for Friday compared to those experienced during today’s searches.
