Workers of the Misericórdias on strike today (and demonstration called)

Workers and union activists are set to protest as the União das Misericórdias has yet to present a proposal for updating the salary table for 2025. The protest will begin near the UMP headquarters and proceed to the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity, and Social Security.

They aim to be received by representatives of the Secretaries of State for Labour, Social Action, and Inclusion, similar to what occurred on July 24, when a scheduled salary negotiation meeting between CESP and UMP was postponed by the latter to September 9.

Célia Lopes, a leader at CESP, expressed to Lusa that they seek clarification from the Government regarding its intention to repeal a 2022 ordinance, which standardizes working conditions for the social sector workers, as announced in the Employment and Work Bulletin in July.

CESP advocates for uniformity, arguing that the funding is the same whether it’s for UMP, the Confederation of Private Institutions of Social Solidarity (CNIS), or the Union of Portuguese Mutualities.

According to the union representative, enacting the Government’s ordinance would represent “a significant setback.”

Furthermore, they want to address information indicating that UMP reached a wage agreement with unions from the UGT—Union Geral de Trabalhadores—at the end of July.

The Misericórdia de Tomar announced the agreement on July 31, stated Célia Lopes.

CESP is affiliated with another union confederation, the CGTP—Confederação Geral dos Trabalhadores Portugueses.
