
A 47-year-old man died and a young adult woman was injured on Sunday following a jet ski collision on the Douro River near Castelo de Paiva, Aveiro district. The victims were reportedly father and daughter.
The incident was reported by the Tâmega and Sousa Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command, which confirmed that the alert for the collision was issued in the afternoon near Ilha do Castelo.
The alert was given shortly after 4 p.m. The daughter was transported to Penafiel Hospital in serious condition.
The accident occurred when the daughter’s jet ski collided with her father’s, causing the man to sustain severe spinal injuries.
Both victims were initially rescued by recreational boats and taken to Praia Fluvial de Bitetos, where they received assistance from the Marco de Canaveses Fire Department.
The jet skis, registered to a company in Paços de Ferreira, collided when the daughter’s vehicle struck her father’s laterally, resulting in fatal injuries for him. The daughter was transported in serious condition to Penafiel Hospital.
They were initially rescued by recreational boats in the area and taken to Praia Fluvial de Bitetos, in Alpendorada, Várzea e Torrão, in the municipality of Marco de Canaveses, where emergency services awaited them.
The Marco de Canaveses Fire Department was on site, alongside an ambulance from Cinfães, the Vale do Sousa Emergency Medical and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER), Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) from Alpendorada, and the Douro Maritime Police.
