A 23-year-old man was arrested on August 6, charged with two robberies, qualified theft, and violence following the theft in the Baixa district of Lisbon.
In a statement, the Public Security Police (PSP) reported that the suspect, a Gambian national, “had already been under investigation due to his very violent conduct, which he employed in committing crimes.” The police were able to determine that, at least since February this year, he is suspected of multiple robberies and thefts.
Specifically, he stole three earphones from a store on Rua dos Fanqueiros, threatening the employee with a glass bottle after she pursued him in an attempt to recover the stolen goods.
The man is also suspected of “stealing a mobile phone inside a train at the Rossio Station, stealing a mobile phone at the Rossio Metro Station,” and “breaking into a shop window on Rua do Carmo during the early hours, where he stole items worth 2,400 euros.”
The detainee had a recent history of thefts and robberies in Lisbon’s Baixa area and was known (through social media videos) for stealing small items from shops in the area.
The suspect has already been brought before an initial hearing, where the most severe coercive measure was applied: he now awaits trial in preventive detention.
