A blockage in the sanitation pipeline near Praça Manuel Arriaga in Nazaré, located in the district of Leiria, has prompted the local authorities to temporarily ban swimming at the northern part of Praia da Nazaré as a precautionary measure.
The municipality reported that the incident was caused by a spill of effluents lasting approximately one and a half hours.
The local authorities have promptly notified the relevant entities and initiated necessary actions to resolve the situation and minimize any potential impacts, according to a statement released by the municipal council.
Water samples have been collected for analysis, and results from these tests are expected from the Instituto Nacional de Saúde Dr. Ricardo Jorge by Wednesday, as stated by the municipal sources.
This marks the second swimming ban at the beach since the beginning of the month, following a technical failure on the first Friday of August that led to a discharge into stormwater drains and unpleasant odors.
The previous ban was lifted on Saturday night after water quality tests were cleared, despite at least 116 individuals receiving treatment at the Local Health Unit of the Leiria Region for symptoms related to water contamination.
The Local Health Unit reported that 72 children and adolescents and 44 adults were treated, mainly for symptoms like vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea.
