Man suspected of domestic violence assaults police and damages cell

A 32-year-old man was arrested by the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) last Sunday, August 10th, in Marinha Grande, for threats and physical assault against two police officers.

Following a report of a family disagreement, later confirmed to be a domestic violence incident, officers were dispatched to the scene. The suspect fled during police intervention and reacted violently when intercepted, issuing threats and assaulting the officers, as explained by the PSP in a statement sent to newsrooms.

The intervention resulted in injuries to one of the officers, who required medical attention at the Hospital de Santo André in Leria.

The 28-year-old victim, the suspect’s partner, filed a complaint against him for both physical and psychological violence, as well as psychological violence towards their children, aged 5 and 1.

The PSP also noted that the suspect has a criminal record, including offenses of physical assault, domestic violence against his partner, threats, and drug trafficking.

Due to these circumstances, the suspect was detained and taken to the detention room at the Marinha Grande Police Station. A few hours later, he broke the window and damaged the paint on the door of the room, as well as the toilet flush.

The suspect has been presented to the judicial authorities and has been subjected to a measure of identity and residence monitoring.

PSP emphasizes that it remains vigilant to this phenomenon of domestic violence and violence against police officers, undertaking all efforts in protecting the most vulnerable individuals and safeguarding the physical integrity of its officers.
