Man dies suffocated by the body of obese woman in Porto

A 59-year-old man died from suffocation involving his wife’s body in the early hours of Monday, August 11, in Campanhã, Porto.

The incident occurred at the start of Monday morning. Neighbors attempted to assist the couple after hearing the woman’s cries for help, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The situation unfolded in the couple’s bedroom. The wife, reportedly weighing over 100 kg, was lying on the bed and moved towards her husband, who was on the floor. However, she lost balance and fell onto him, becoming trapped between the wall and the bed.

By the time neighbors managed to remove the woman from on top of her partner—after forcing the door open—the victim had already lost consciousness.

The Portuense Volunteer Firefighters were called to the location and attempted to resuscitate the man, but all efforts were fruitless.

The Public Security Police (PSP) also attended the scene and determined, after appropriate investigations, that the death was due to accidental suffocation.

The incident has gained international attention. In New York, United States, Latin Times covered the story.

In the United Kingdom, several newspapers highlighted the news. The Mirror reported, “Man crushed to death by wife after she tripped and fell on him.” The Daily Mail took a similar angle.

The Sun referred to it as a “bedroom tragedy” and included the woman’s weight in its headline: “Husband suffocated to death by 100 kg wife.”
