Fire in Covilhã is in the aftermath stage and consumed about 700 hectares.

A surveillance team is on the ground to rapidly address and neutralize any potential flare-ups, stated the mayor of Covilhã, in the Castelo Branco district.

The mayor of Covilhã noted that mop-up operations were ongoing last night, but the fire is currently under observation.

Vítor Pereira mentioned that the damage assessment is ongoing but specified that scrubland, pine, and eucalyptus were affected, impacting “Mother Nature.”

“Regarding the damages, we haven’t finalized the assessment yet,” he emphasized.

The mayor highlighted that no homes, animals, or human lives were lost due to the fire, which occurred in an area previously affected by fire five years ago.

The mayor also noted that on Tuesday, the day the fire was brought under control, three aerial units were on site addressing remaining hot spots.

According to the fire department commander of Covilhã, Luís Marques, “surveillance is ongoing, there have been minor rekindlings, and mop-up operations continue.”

The fire ignited at 15:02 on Sunday near Pereiro, adjacent to Aldeia do Xisto in Sobral de São Miguel, within the Açor mountain range and near the edge of the Estrela mountain range.

The fire was declared under control on Tuesday morning.

The National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection’s website indicated that 177 personnel and 59 vehicles are deployed at the site.
