The monthly bulletin from APREN revealed that the total electricity production in Portugal reached 3,935 gigawatt-hours (GWh), a 31.5% increase compared to the same month in 2024, with a notable rise of 225 GWh in wind generation. In the production mix, wind accounted for 25.2%, solar 20.4%, hydro 20.2%, and bioenergy 5.7%.
Among the European countries analyzed, Portugal led in wind production percentage for the month, achieving 25.7%, surpassing Denmark’s 22.7% and Germany’s 18.2%. Water storage in reservoirs increased by 8.8% from July last year, reaching 80% capacity.
The average price of electricity in the Iberian Electricity Market (MIBEL) was 63.4 euros per megawatt-hour (MWh). Between January and July, there were 1,212 non-consecutive hours where renewable generation fully met continental electricity consumption.
During the same period, special regime production led to a cumulative savings of approximately 4.984 billion euros in the wholesale market, equivalent to 164.4 euros/MWh.
From January to July, renewable incorporation in electricity generation reached 79.6%, placing Portugal fourth in the European ranking, behind Norway, Denmark, and Austria.
According to Pedro Amaral Jorge, CEO of APREN, “the results of July highlight the pivotal role of renewables in Portugal’s energy transition, ensuring environmental, economic, and strategic benefits.”
However, he cautions that “to consolidate this path, it is crucial to invest in network reinforcement, storage solutions, and mechanisms that enhance the flexibility of the electrical system.”
