West Line reopened after collision between train and vehicle. One dead

The re-opening of the railway occurred at 7:30 PM, as reported by the IP.

This afternoon, a collision between a train and a vehicle at a level crossing on the West Line led to the death of the driver of a light commercial vehicle in the parish union of Monte Redondo and Carreira, Leiria, occurring at 3:00 PM.

The IP confirmed that a “train collided with a road vehicle” at the automated level crossing at kilometer 175.976, between Louriçal (Pombal) and Monte Real (Leiria) on the West Line.

Due to the accident, circulation was suspended between these two stations. The IP clarified that the indication received was that “the equipment was functioning.”

A source from the National Republican Guard (GNR) stated that the deceased was an 83-year-old man.

The incident also resulted in two minor injuries treated on-site without the need for hospitalization, according to the GNR.

The GNR explained that the Office for the Prevention and Investigation of Aircraft and Railway Accidents was contacted, and the Traffic Accident Criminal Investigation Unit of the Leiria Traffic Detachment was dispatched to the scene.

Councilor of Leiria City Hall, Luís Lopes, responsible for Civil Protection, mentioned that there were 20 passengers and four crew members on the train.

A source from the Sub-regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command of the Leiria Region reported that resources from the fire department, GNR, and National Institute of Medical Emergency were dispatched to the location.
