
The total revenue from tourist accommodation increased by 7.8% in the first half of the year, reaching 2.9955 billion euros, with guests increasing by 3.6% and overnight stays by 2.4%, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE).
Based on the tourism activity statistics published by INE, until June, establishments providing tourist accommodation recorded 14.9 million guests (+3.6%) and 36.4 million overnight stays (+2.4%), resulting in total revenue of 2.9955 billion euros (stemming from all hotel establishment activities, +7.8%) and room revenue of 2.2682 billion euros (only from overnight stays, +8.0%).
Overnight stays by residents increased by 6.0%, amounting to 10.7 million, while non-resident stays increased by 1.0%, totaling 25.8 million.
Considering only the second quarter of the year, total revenue from tourist accommodation grew by 9.4% to 2.042 billion euros, and room revenue increased by 9.8% to 1.5694 billion euros (in the previous quarter, these indicators had increased by 4.6% and 4.1%, respectively).
The statistical institute notes that these results were influenced by the fact that the Easter holiday period occurred this year in the second quarter, whereas in 2024, it was primarily in the first quarter.
From April to June, the tourist accommodation sector recorded 9.2 million guests (+4.4%) and 23.0 million overnight stays (+4.2%), indicators that had shown variations of +2.4% and -0.4% in the first quarter, respectively.
External markets were dominant, representing 72.3% of total overnight stays, a total of 16.7 million (+2.9%). However, their share decreased by 0.9 percentage points compared to the same quarter of the previous year, marking the third consecutive quarter with a year-on-year decrease in the share of external markets.
Meanwhile, overnight stays by residents increased by 7.6% to 6.4 million, marking the third consecutive quarter where the growth rate of domestic overnight stays surpassed that of non-residents.
In the second quarter, overnight stays increased across all segments: +4.0% in hotels (81.2% of the total), +3.0% in local accommodation (representing 14.9% of the total), and +13.1% in rural and residential tourism (with a 3.9% share).
Greater Lisbon was the region most dependent on external markets for overnight stays (82.9% of the total), followed by Madeira (82.4%) and the Algarve (81.4%).
In contrast, in the Center and Alentejo regions, non-resident overnight stays had less representation in total regional figures (34.6% and 36.0%, respectively).
In the second quarter, the Algarve had the highest concentration of overnight stays (27.1% of the total), followed by Greater Lisbon (23.4% of the total) and the North (17.8%). Resident overnight stays were more concentrated in the North (21.7% of the total), while non-residents primarily stayed in the Algarve (30.5% of the total).
The British market maintained its leadership, accounting for 19.3% of total non-resident overnight stays, registering a growth of 1.9% compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
German market overnight stays, the second main emitter market (11.3% of the total), increased by 2.1%, followed by the North American market (10.4% share), which grew by 5.9%.
Among the top 10 emitter markets in the second quarter, the Spanish market saw the highest growth (+9.2%). Conversely, the French market experienced the largest decline (-9.3%).
From April to June, all regions recorded growth in overnight stays, with the greatest increases in the North (+8.7%) and Alentejo (+8.1%), while Greater Lisbon showed the most modest growth (+0.9%).
Across all tourist accommodation establishments, the average revenue per available room (RevPAR) reached 80.9 euros in the second quarter, marking an increase of 7.3% (+2.8% in the previous quarter). The average revenue per occupied room (ADR) reached 127.5 euros (+5.3%, after +2.8% in the previous quarter).
The highest RevPAR was recorded in Greater Lisbon (129.7 euros), followed by Madeira (105.7 euros), with the Lisbon Metropolitan Area also standing out with the highest ADR (165.3 euros), followed by Madeira (128.0 euros).
In consideration of all accommodation types (tourist accommodation establishments, campsites, holiday camps, and youth hostels), 9.8 million guests and 24.8 million overnight stays were recorded in the second quarter (+4.0% and +4.2%, respectively).
According to INE, the gross monthly remuneration per worker in accommodation activities rose by 6.6% in the second quarter compared to the same period last year, reaching 1,370 euros, 372 euros below the figure recorded for the overall economy, where remuneration increased by 6.0%.
