Going to the supermarket becomes more expensive again: The foods that became more expensive

Shopping for groceries has become nearly 21 euros more expensive than during the same period last year, disclosed DECO PROTeste this Thursday, as part of its weekly price monitoring.

The data indicate that the cost of the food basket continues to rise: “This week, on August 13, it cost 244.30 euros, 3.65 euros more (an increase of 1.52%) than the previous week. This is one of the highest prices since the consumer protection organization began tracking the prices of this essential goods basket.”

“At the beginning of this year, on January 1, the food basket cost 8.14 euros less (a decrease of 3.45%). Back in January 2022, when DECO PROTeste started this analysis, consumers spent 56.60 euros less (a decrease of 30.16%) to purchase exactly the same food products,” reads the released note.

Comparing with a year ago, “between August 14, 2024, and August 13, 2025, there is a difference of 20.48 euros when comparing the same basket on the two days (an increase of 9.15%).”

The year-on-year change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 2.6% in July, a rate 0.2 percentage points (pp) higher than the previous month, confirmed the National Statistics Institute (INE) this Tuesday.

Which products have increased the most?

In the last week, between August 6 and 13, besides roasted ground coffee (+15%), the products whose prices increased most in percentage terms were cereal flakes (up 18%), whole grain cereals (up 12%), and frozen peas (up 10%).

Coffee stands out because in a week, “the price of roasted ground coffee rose by 67 cents (increasing by 15%),” with “a small 250-gram package of coffee now possibly costing 5.16 euros.”

“The price of this product has experienced various ups and downs over the last few months, but this week it reached the highest price of the year. In the first week of the year, consumers paid 3.81 euros for the exact same package of coffee, 1.35 euros less (a decrease of 35%),” notes DECO PROTeste.

Approximately three years ago, when DECO PROTeste began this analysis, this product cost 2.99 euros, 2.16 euros less (a decrease of 72%).

If comparing this week’s prices with those of the first week of the year, on January 1, 2025, the highest percentage increase in price was seen in products like roasted ground coffee (up 35%), eggs (up 28%), and broccoli (up 27%).

Since DECO PROTeste began this analysis on January 5, 2022, the highest percentage increases were recorded for beef for boiling (up 92%), eggs (up 81%), and roasted ground coffee (up 72%).

There is a “significant number of Portuguese families facing difficulties to ensure regular access to essential food items,” according to DECO. This comes at a time when sales from the two largest supermarkets hit a record: five million per hour.
