The tech-heavy Nasdaq declined by 0.03% to 21,703.74 points.
The markets are closely watching the meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska today, regarding the conflict initiated by Russia in February 2022.
Following an initial discussion with only interpreters present, delegations from both countries will join Trump and Putin for a meeting including a working lunch, according to the schedule announced by Russian authorities.
No European leader has been invited to participate, not even Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine.
In recent days, Zelensky and European allies have strived to persuade Trump, whom they met via videoconference on Wednesday, to ensure that no decision is made behind the Ukrainians’ backs.
Trump acknowledged two possible outcomes after speaking with the Europeans: either the summit goes well, leading to another meeting with Zelensky included, or it goes poorly, and no further meetings will occur.
On Thursday, the New York Stock Exchange closed without a clear direction, pressured by a sharp rise in producer prices in the United States, casting doubt on the Federal Reserve’s interest rate cut schedule. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 0.02%, and the Nasdaq dropped by 0.03%, remaining nearly unchanged.
The broader S&P 500 gained 0.03% and also remained nearly stable, yet still managed to reach a record closing high of 6,468.54 points.
