Mayor of Sátão: “Today I breathe better, we have no active front”

“Today I breathe easier, at the moment we have no active fronts. We have some rekindling, but we have firefighters, sappers, and military personnel working to prevent further flare-ups,” said Alexandre Vaz at 4:30 PM.

The mayor of the Municipality of Sátão, in the district of Viseu, where the “major fire” originated, intersecting with a front burning in Trancoso, district of Guarda, stated that the current effort is focused on rebuilding.

“In Águas Boas, where a calamity occurred yesterday [Thursday], we lived through very, very difficult hours, today we have managed to achieve some calm and are working to ensure everything is properly extinguished,” reacted the president.

Alexandre Vaz acknowledged that there has been “no time yet” to calculate the burned area, estimating “many hectares,” but stated he could confirm that “several sheds burned, some with firewood, leaving people with nothing, and a wooden house.”

“I also know that a tractor trailer, an agricultural machine, and many yards and animal feed burned, meaning there is a very large loss to our populations, and we need to better account for what happened,” he recognized.

The fire affects the municipalities of Sátão, Sernancelhe, Moimenta da Beira, Penedono, and São João da Pesqueira (Viseu district); Aguiar da Beira, Trancoso, Fornos de Algodres, Meda, and Celorico da Beira (Guarda district).

The Vila Boa fire, in the parish of Ferreira de Aves, Sátão, district of Viseu, was alerted at 1:03 AM on Wednesday, the 13th, and on the same day reached the municipalities of Sernancelhe, also in the district of Viseu, and Aguiar da Beira, district of Guarda.

At 5:00 PM, 992 operatives were combating this fire, supported by 324 vehicles and five aerial resources, according to the official page of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC).

The alert for the Freches fire, in the Municipality of Trancoso, district of Guarda, occurred on Saturday, the 9th, at 5:21 PM.

At 5:00 PM, 482 operatives were combating this fire, supported by 168 vehicles, as per the official page of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC).
