‘A day for Camões’ involves 750 participants in Leiria

‘A Day for Camões’ is organized by the Afonso Lopes Vieira Municipal Library in partnership with the Commission for the Celebrations of the Fifth Centenary of the Birth of Luís de Camões. The event aims to “honor the poet’s legacy and his contribution to the Portuguese language,” stated the Leiria City Council.

Various locations around the city, including the Miguel Franco Theater, Praça Rodrigues Lobo, Jardim Luís de Camões, and primary schools in the county, will host a range of activities such as readings, theater performances, and musical acts. These events invite reflection on the significance of Camões in the history of literature and the Portuguese language.

The program begins with the show “Camões Among Stories, Verses, and Melodies,” performed by Alice Senhorinho and Hugo Sampaio. This is followed by the play “The Journey of Camões,” presented by the association Era Uma Voz, which will also be performed in the afternoon.

A group of students from José Saraiva Basic School will interpret Camões’ poem “Verdes são os campos,” while author Ana Cristina Luz will introduce her book “Who Am I?” to primary schools in Leiria. The book acquaints young readers with Camões and discusses his importance to the Portuguese language.

The association Sísifus will conclude the event “A Day for Camões” with a session titled “Saying and Feeling Luís de Camões” in the late afternoon, bringing Camões’ poetry to the public spaces of Leiria.

“A Day for Camões” is part of the Reading Week in Leiria, which engages over 17,000 students across various educational levels until April 4.
