Former Finance Minister Fernando Medina stated on Monday that the idea of forming a Left alliance for local elections “does not make sense.”
“A Left alliance in local elections does not make sense. Each local election is different,” he said on the program Conversa de Eleição on Rádio Renascença.
“As a general solution, it should not be considered, but instead on a case-by-case basis,” he argued. “It is a response that can only be addressed at the local level.”
Regarding the constitutional revision proposed by the Liberal Initiative (IL), Medina commented that the party led by Rui Rocha aims to conduct a “litmus test” to determine if the PSD leans “sufficiently to the Right.”
“This is, first and foremost, pointless. A waste of time. The constitutional revision comes from IL, whose results fell short of their leaders’ expectations. They started to figure out ways to challenge the AD,” he stated.
For the former Mayor of Lisbon, the constitutional revision was “launched solely with a political objective,” that of “pressuring the PSD.” “I think it is a significant mistake by the Liberal Initiative,” he lamented, emphasizing that the party is merely “creating a distraction.”
“The IL is currently unnecessary from a parliamentary perspective because it does not serve any majority, so they tried a ‘look at me, look at me, now I will launch a constitutional revision,'” he remarked, adding that Chega will “dominate the debate” as it has already presented concrete proposals for amendment.
It should be noted that IL leader Rui Rocha announced the constitutional revision project after meeting with the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in Belém, justifying it with the aim of achieving a “more open society” by reducing the “central role” of the State in the economy.
