The Municipality of Abrantes, in the district of Santarém, hosts an event aimed at fostering an open reflection on how “words influence thought, emotions, and the construction of reality,” in celebration of World Philosophy Day on November 20.
Over the course of three days, writers, academics, sociologists, journalists, advertisers, and researchers will engage in panels and debates discussing topics such as the role of words in social transformation, their ethical and political power, communication in the digital age, and silence as the absence of words.
Manuel Jorge Valamatos, the city’s mayor, will officially open the event at 5:00 PM at the Municipal Library, followed by an inaugural lecture from José Gil, the principal speaker and honoree of this edition.
The program also includes an Assembly of Words and a Questions and Answers Residency, led by Joana Rita Sousa, involving students from primary to professional education, aimed at encouraging critical thinking among younger generations.
Concurrently, a book fair will be held, alongside an exhibition by Susana Rosa titled ‘Imperceptible Traits of Resistance,’ and another showcasing works resulting from the philosophical residency.
Attendees can enjoy free entry to the Iberian Museum of Archeology and Art of Abrantes (MIAA), awarded Museum of the Year 2023, throughout the event.
The event concludes on November 22 at 9:30 PM with the performance “Women Poem,” featuring Maria Caetano Villalobos, accompanied by Rute Rocha Ferreira on guitar and keyboard.
The festival aims to “invite citizens to reflect, encourage critical thinking, and value words as an essential tool for thinking, acting, and transforming,” emphasizes the municipality in an official statement.
Activities will take place at the António Botto Municipal Library, with free admission.
