Access to the A2 on the IC20 closed on Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

Autoestradas do Baixo Tejo (AEBT), a Brisa sub-concession, announced a road closure scheduled from 10:00 p.m. Monday to 7:00 a.m. Tuesday, affecting the Caparica-Setúbal stretch.

Traffic will be redirected via Rotunda do Centro Sul and the Almada-Setúbal branch.

The IC20 underwent widening works for 20 months, expanding from three to four lanes in each direction between Centro Sul and Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia (Caparica), covering a distance of 3.9 kilometers. These works were completed in June.

Travelers from Costa da Caparica to Lisbon now benefit from a tunnel and a viaduct, offering direct access to the area known as ‘garrafão’ of the Ponte 25 de Abril.

Those arriving from Almada can alternatively access Rotunda do Centro Sul for the Ponte 25 de Abril via Rotunda do Monumento aos Trabalhadores da Indústria Naval – hospital junction.

New pedestrian crossings with soft mode access are also available at the University node, near the service area and Pragal station, and at the Hospital node, equipped with an elevator for those with reduced mobility.

“The Municipal Council of Almada welcomes the completion of the IC20 works, which mark a new approach to mobility, and thanks all residents and visitors for their patience during the last 20 months,” the council stated.

AEBT, responsible for managing the IC20, indicated that the project was undertaken to fulfill a contract obligation, necessitating an increase in lanes when a certain daily traffic limit was reached.

The IC20 records an average daily traffic exceeding 60,000 vehicles annually.
