“When discussing causes, we are referring, on one hand, to clarifying the legal framework surrounding a process and, on the other, to technical causes and facts to be established in relation to what happened. The sooner this occurs, of course, the better for all of us. Finally, we learn for the future, prevent for the future,” stated Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to journalists.
The head of state spoke outside the Church of São Domingos, with Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, slightly behind him, at the close of a mass held in memory of the victims of Wednesday’s accident, which resulted in 16 fatalities and several critically injured.
Following the mass, the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, and the Mayor of Lisbon walked from Largo de São Domingos to the site of Wednesday’s accident at Calçada da Glória, where they laid wreaths.
