Account for the value of the reform! You can now request the troop count online.

The option to request a military service record count online has been available since the beginning of this month, according to the Social Security Institute (ISS). This pertains to Mandatory Military Service, which is part of the social security career and contributes to the pension amount.

“Now, it is possible to request a review of the social security career related to Mandatory Military Service (MMS) in advance through the Social Security Portal,” states the ISS press release.

This new feature, explains Social Security, “allows citizens to address this issue before reaching retirement age, ensuring their social security career is complete and validated in a timely manner”.

“This feature is intended to speed up the processing of future pension requests and improve the efficiency of services,” the same notice reads.

Who can make an online request?

The Social Security indicates that the advance online review request is available for citizens who meet the following conditions:

  • Male and born until 01-01-1987
  • Not pension applicants or already pensioners

  • After clicking on Career review request, select Mandatory Military Service as the type of career.

Then, “you will be notified in your message area in the Social Security Portal when the request is processed. It is also possible, at any time, to view, change, or cancel the submitted request”.

“By addressing your social security past today, you ensure faster future access to your pension. Easier for you, more efficient for Social Security,” recommends the public agency.

It is necessary to “reinforce in young people the obligation to defend Portugal”

Portugal needs an additional eight thousand military personnel to reach the legal goal of 32 thousand in the Armed Forces, with projections of up to 36 thousand in the next 20 years, and is lacking in anti-air defenses.

In an interview with the newspaper Público, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces (CEMGFA), General José Nunes da Fonseca, specifies that there is “low-altitude defense capability,” but acknowledges vulnerability “at medium and high altitudes,” similar to “Ukraine” and “most NATO countries” (North Atlantic Treaty Organization).

“For the goal of 32 thousand military personnel, we are short of about seven to eight thousand. The estimate for human resources is to get very close to 35 to 36 thousand, given the capacities being raised as they are very significant, very technological and, above all, require people. We cannot acquire equipment and then not have people to operate them,” he said.

The main military advisor to the Minister of National Defense estimated that 67 billion euros are needed just for equipment over the next two decades, which is around “3.5 billion euros per year”.
