Activists invade Galp and spread crosses due to deaths in the heatwave

Climáximo activists staged a protest at the headquarters of Galp in Lisbon on Wednesday morning, placing 284 crosses in the entrance atrium of the oil company. They stated this action aimed to “denounce its responsibility in a true massacre: the heatwave that struck Portugal from late June to early July.”

Anne Morrison, an activist from the environmental movement and spokesperson for this action, asserted that the heatwave, which affected not only Portugal but also other European countries, “was not merely a meteorological anomaly.”

Referring to the excess mortality recorded, she emphasized: “These people are not just statistics: they are grandparents, parents, friends, neighbors, community members.”

“We know that heatwaves particularly impact those already in vulnerable conditions, such as the elderly, pregnant women, infants, people in precarious housing, and outdoor workers. This number should shock us all as a society. It was a massacre perpetrated by oil companies like Galp,” said the 70-year-old activist.
