Two students involved in the End to Fossil movement were removed from an event hosted by AD at Campo Pequeno in Lisbon after disrupting Luís Montenegro’s speech. They were subsequently taken to a police station.
The Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) from the Lisbon Metropolitan Command was approached for confirmation of the detentions, but the PSP neither confirmed nor denied the incident.
A statement from the movement revealed that the students are being held at the Penha de França police station. The activists reportedly stood up during the event to question the PSD leader on his commitment to end fossil fuels by 2030. Before finishing their statement, they were forcibly removed from the venue.
The statement also alleges that the police used excessive force, including handcuffing the students and conducting a non-consensual search without providing a reason for their actions.
Catarina Bio, spokesperson for the movement, highlighted that this protest, under the banner of the Student Climate Strike, aims to address the absence of significant climate action plans by the PSD and other political parties. Bio remarked, “Current plans spell a future in flames and the collapse of ecosystems and society. Throughout this electoral campaign, our generation has not heard of a single measure that ensures our future. That measure is ending fossil fuels by 2030. We may be detained and restrained, but nothing frightens us more than the climate crisis.”
