Actress Carmen Chaplin is honored at the JUVE Baião festival, which starts today.

The town of Baião is hosting its second edition of a festival aimed at creating a “meeting space between artistic creation and young audiences,” with programming that involves the school community.

This year, the festival will honor actress and director Carmen Chaplin, acknowledging “the actress and director’s career and her role in preserving and reinventing the family legacy,” according to a press release from the event’s organizers.

Carmen Chaplin, who is also expected to attend the Leffest – Lisbon Film Festival in November, will participate in a debate in Baião discussing the impact of Charles Chaplin’s “humanist message.” This will be followed by a screening of the 1925 film “The Gold Rush,” directed by Charles Chaplin.

A highlight of this second edition of the JUVE meetings is the screening of films shot in the Baião region, including “O Menino de Baião” by João Seugirdor, “Meia Dúzia de Hábitos” by Salvador Gil, “Chama” by Lucas Dutra, and “O Protótipo” by Nuno Rocha, featuring participation from local students.

Among the films scheduled are “É do Inimigo?” by Alexis Morante, “Big Trouble in Little China” by John Carpenter, and “The Old Man and the Sword” by Fábio Powers.

Actress and writer Sónia Balacó, the patron of this edition of JUVE, will meet with students, actress Paula Magalhães will lead a workshop on artistic expression, and Luísa Sequeira and Sama will conduct a mobile filmmaking workshop.

The Baião JUVE, an initiative by Baião town hall curated by Rui Tendinha, will conclude on Saturday with a cine-concert featuring musician Benjamim and screenings of classic silent short films.
