Pedro Nuno Santos, the Secretary-General of the Socialist Party (PS), expressed on Monday concerns about the Democratic Alliance (AD) Government’s approach to security issues, accusing it of using security forces for electoral gain similar to far-right tactics.
“We need to address the issue with calmness and avoid using security for political demagoguery, as we have seen notably from the far-right. The AD Government itself fell into the temptation of instrumentalizing the security theme and the security forces for electoral benefit,” he told the press.
Santos emphasized that the socialists have consistently handled the issue “with discretion, serenity, and calmness,” which he believes is necessary. He acknowledged that the rise in violent crime, particularly among young people and against women, is a matter of serious concern.
He advocated for the continued enhancement of the police career path and expressed openness to revising these careers.
“There was an ongoing negotiation that was interrupted and which we will conclude because we believe it is very important for these careers to be attractive enough for young people to want to join this profession and thereby contribute to the effective force we need to maintain safety,” he stated.
It is noteworthy that around two weeks ago, the socialist leader had already mentioned that “” and should not be “appropriated by political actors,” a practice he claimed has been evident in recent months by the PSD/CDS-PP Government.
