After all, until when can you pay the IRS? Can it be paid in installments?

The deadline for submitting the Individual Income Tax Return has passed, and now follows either payment or refund. So, until when can you pay your IRS? Can it be paid in installments? Let’s break it down.

“The tax must be paid by August 31 of the year in which the IRS return was submitted, if the value to be paid or received, i.e., the settlement, was done by July 31. Or by December 31, if the settlement is made by November 30,” reads the Government website.

The Executive also explains that “there are various ways to pay taxes if you are in Portugal, but it can also be done from abroad.”

Can you pay in installments?

“If you have an IRS bill and do not have the financial means to pay within the established deadlines, you can choose simplified installment payment, provided you meet the conditions and comply with the necessary requirements,” the portal of the Executive states.

Practically, debts of 5,000 euros or less can be paid in up to 12 installments without providing a guarantee, as long as you have no other debts to the Tax Authority (AT), explains the Executive.

For this, “you must submit the request for installment payment electronically via the Finance Portal, within 15 days after the final payment date of the bill.”

How to request IRS installment payment?

In May, the Government explained through a social media post that to request installment payment access the Finance Portal and follow these steps:

  • Installment Plans
  • Simulate/Register Request

How many installments can be requested?

Up to 36 installments can be requested, with a minimum amount of 25.50€ per month. The calculation amount for installments does not include late payment interest.

You should also know that “the first installment must be paid by the end of the month following the authorization of the plan.”

In case of default, you should know that “the failure to pay any installment will result in the immediate maturity of the following ones and the issuance of a debt certificate, which may initiate a tax enforcement process.”

It should also be noted that “in case of an error in the collection (settlement) of the Individual Income Tax, you can request total or partial annulment within 120 days in the form of a gracious claim on the Tax and Customs Authority portal.”

“You can consult legislation with the applicable articles of the Tax Procedure and Process Code regarding the legal ways available to make the gracious claim,” notes the Government.
