After several weeks of increases—reaching last week the highest level since 2022—the price of the food basket has decreased by nearly six euros, according to updated data from DECO PROTeste.
In a statement, the Portuguese Association for Consumer Protection indicated that the “essential basket of 63 products costs 239.95 euros this week,” which is 5.83 euros less compared to the previous week.
Despite this, consumers are now paying 12.86 euros more than last year for the same products.
Between July 16 and July 23, there is a “difference of less than 5.83 euros when comparing the same basket on both days,” representing an increase of 2.36%. From January 1 to July 23, there is an increase of 1.6%, translating into a difference of 3.79 euros.
Furthermore, from January 5, 2022, when DECO PROTeste began monitoring the cost of the basket of 63 food items, to July 23, 2025, the difference is 52.25 euros, amounting to a 27.84% increase.

The rise in egg prices began to be felt in the USA due to a shortage of this food, exacerbated by avian flu, which led to the culling of millions of chickens.
In early March, United States President Donald Trump accused his predecessor, Joe Biden, of leaving the country in an “economic catastrophe and an inflation nightmare,” including a lack of eggs in many supermarkets or very high prices.
