The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) forecasts days of wind, rain, and maritime turmoil until the weekend due to depression Claudia, expected to begin affecting Minho late Tuesday.
In a statement released today, the IPMA indicates that the depression will then extend to other regions of the mainland.
The effects of the depression, initially with the approach of the associated frontal system, will be felt in mainland Portugal “starting at the end of the day on the 11th in Minho, gradually extending to the rest of the mainland throughout the 12th and in the following days, through successive instability lines, at least until the weekend,” the IPMA announced.
“Thus, periods of persistent and sometimes heavy rain are expected, especially on the 12th and 13th, accompanied by thunderstorms. From the afternoon of the 13th, precipitation will occur mainly as showers, sometimes heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms,” according to the report.
The IPMA states that “the largest precipitation accumulations are expected in the North and Center coastal areas and in mountainous regions, possibly exceeding 150 mm in some locations by Sunday.”
The wind will intensify from the south quadrant, beginning Tuesday, “with gusts up to 70 km/h in Minho, extending to the rest of the western coast on the 12th, and up to 80 km/h in highland areas.”
“The peak wind intensity is expected on Thursday,” with gusts that “could reach around 90 km/h on the coast and about 120 km/h in highland areas.”
Additionally, southwestern waves ranging from three to four meters, temporarily four to five meters on Thursday, are forecasted, “affecting usually more sheltered coastal parts, such as the southern Algarve coast or the Arrábida region in the Setúbal district.”
The IPMA mentioned that due to this situation, “meteorological warnings will be issued throughout the week, specifically for precipitation, thunderstorms, gusts, and maritime agitation,” advising the public to follow updates.
The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere noted that depression Claudia, expressed at altitude, is expected to be part of “a vast complex depressionary region over the North Atlantic, anticipated to remain almost stationary until the weekend.”
