The Portuguese Socialist Party (PS) has issued a firm condemnation of any form of domestic violence following emerging reports involving Victor Hugo Salgado, the Mayor of Vizela and head of the Braga District Federation of the PS. In a statement, the party expressed deep concern over the allegations made public against Salgado.
The PS announced that party Secretary-General Pedro Nuno Santos has requested Salgado to resign as head of the PS Braga Federation. The party also clarified that it would not support Salgado’s reelection bid for the position of Mayor of Vizela.
Reaffirming its commitment to combating violence, the PS emphasized its determination to fight all forms of violence, regardless of the perpetrator’s identity. The statement also highlighted that the case is currently under investigation, and it is the role of the Justice system to ascertain facts and ensure accountability while upholding the presumption of innocence principle.
The party expressed solidarity with victims of violence, stressing the importance of thoroughly and swiftly investigating all allegations to guarantee justice and protection for those in need.
Amidst the allegations, Victor Hugo Salgado responded on Friday, dismissing the accusations of aggression against his wife as a “political manipulation of private life.” In a joint statement with his wife, Salgado claimed the public disclosure of these reports, which he deemed irrelevant to civic life or political debate, was an attempt at political manipulation.
This response followed a report by Observador revealing that Salgado, who is running again for Mayor of Vizela under the PS, is under investigation for alleged domestic violence. Both the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGR) and the National Republican Guard (GNR) have confirmed that an inquiry is underway involving the mayor.
