
Following the derailment of the Glória elevator in Lisbon, which resulted in 16 fatalities and dozens of injuries, several political parties have announced the cancellation of upcoming events.
The PSD has canceled its municipal convention, scheduled for Sunday in Porto, and the CDS-PP has called off its political ‘rentrée’ that was set to take place in Vale de Cambra, Aveiro district.
Centrist leader Nuno Melo has also suspended his party agenda until Monday.
Chega has postponed a protest planned for Saturday against the Constitutional Court’s veto on the foreigners’ law, as well as the announcement of its candidate for the Oeiras City Hall, which was scheduled for Friday with the party leader’s participation.
The PS has delayed its municipal convention, which was to occur in Coimbra on Saturday. Additionally, Socialist Secretary-General José Luís Carneiro has canceled all engagements for Friday, including a visit to Póvoa de Varzim and participation in the presentation of a municipal candidate in Castelo Branco.
O Livre has postponed its municipal congress originally set for the weekend in Porto to mark the party’s political restart.
On Thursday, shortly after the accident, the President of the Republic announced the cancellation of the Book Festival at the Belém Palace, which was planned to run from Thursday to Sunday.
Presidential candidate Luís Marques Mendes also announced the cancellation of all campaign activities scheduled for the coming days.
The PCP will proceed with the Avante! Festival, the party’s political kickoff event happening from Friday to Sunday in Seixal, attended by the communist secretary-general.
An official communist source conveyed that during the event, Paulo Raimundo will express “solidarity with the victims and call for the necessary support, acknowledgment of the professionals who aided in the rescue, and a swift determination of the causes and the lessons learned from it.”
On Friday, meetings between the Government and parties, including PS and PCP, will continue in Parliament to discuss topics such as the State Budget for the upcoming year.
