A prominent figure in medicine, research, and academia, Maria do Carmo Fonseca has been selected by António José Seguro as his national representative for the upcoming presidential race set for January 18th next year.
“Maria do Carmo Fonseca epitomizes the essence of my candidacy: independent, inclusive, and unifying. Public life cannot be comprised solely of politicians. My vision for Portugal is founded on knowledge, science, education, and culture,” Seguro stated in an announcement.
The presidential candidate, backed by the Socialist Party, aims to “bring the best into public life,” noting that Maria do Carmo Fonseca “is one of our finest.”
“I want women to take on more prominence and leadership in our nation. Quality public life and politics demand diversity in leadership roles. I am deeply honored by her trust and support,” Seguro added.
In the same announcement, Fonseca explained her acceptance of this role, expressing her desire for “a future built with intelligence, courage, and independence.”
“I wish for a President who values science, education, and culture as vibrant forces capable of transforming Portugal. I want a President with vision, serving the country rather than entrenched interests,” Fonseca emphasized.
Recognized with the Prémio Pessoa in 2010, Fonseca also served as president of the Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM), described as a “world-renowned institution she helped to establish and strengthen.”
According to her curriculum vitae shared by the campaign, “Throughout her career, Maria do Carmo Fonseca has been distinguished by excellence in her research in molecular biology, particularly in the study of RNA splicing and genetic mechanisms regulating gene expression — discoveries with significant implications for understanding and treating human diseases.”
