The Council of Ministers has approved a resolution authorizing the Air Force to invest up to 30 million euros in the Montijo Air Base to relocate Transit Aerodrome No. 1 (AT1, Figo Maduro), an infrastructure associated with the Air Force and located within the perimeter of Humberto Delgado Airport, according to an official statement.
“This decision is part of the Government’s plan to expand, on a transitional basis, the capacity of Humberto Delgado Airport, addressing the increase in air traffic demand until the Luís de Camões airport becomes operational,” the Government emphasized.
The transfer of AT1 operations should be completed by the end of 2028, it further stated.
The Council of Ministers also approved a resolution mandating the Air Force to “conduct the necessary studies to determine the future location of the Alcochete Firing Range.”
“This decision, following the determination for the construction of the New Lisbon Airport (NAL) at that site, is of great strategic importance, considering the vital importance of this Air Force unit for national sovereignty,” the statement read.
The Government also determined “the development of studies necessary for the reorganization of airspace around the new airport and the future firing range, in order to allow and reconcile military and civil aviation operations.”
According to the executive led by Luís Montenegro, this will be a collaborative process involving competent entities, the Air Force, NAV – Air Navigation of Portugal, the National Aeronautical Authority, and ANAC (National Civil Aviation Authority).
On May 14, 2024, the Government approved the construction of the new airport for the Lisbon region at the Alcochete Firing Range, following the recommendation of the Independent Technical Commission (CTI).
