Airbus signs strategic partnership with the Portuguese Critical Software

The technology director of Airbus, Sabine Klauke, announced an extended partnership with Portugal-based Critical Software, emphasizing the importance of strengthening ties. This collaboration focuses on civil and commercial aircraft, though specific agreement details remain undisclosed. The partnership aims to harness both companies’ capabilities in designing and supplying certified and safety-critical software across various domains, including avionics and connectivity systems.

Embedded software’s significance is increasing, especially for the next generation of aircraft Airbus is developing, according to Klauke. The partnership is expected to enhance software-related aspects and prepare future aircraft models envisioned by the decade’s end, integrating more aerodynamic designs.

Critical Software, headquartered in Coimbra since 1998, employs over 1,400 people in Portugal, the UK, Germany, and the USA. CEO João Carreira expressed pride in advancing their collaboration with Airbus, aiming to push innovation where safety and reliability are paramount.

Integrating Airbus’s aerospace expertise with Critical Software’s proficiency in embedded engineering will benefit key aircraft systems, including flight control and cabin applications. Klauke highlighted the availability of young talent in Portugal eager to drive change, and as a woman, she considers it an honor to be part of the technological transformation stage.

Safety remains central in Airbus’s software-based aircraft approach, supporting ambitions for automated operations and sustainable flight paths. Artificial intelligence also plays a crucial role, optimizing daily operations through enhanced flight platforms.

Addressing technological transformation challenges, Klauke cited CO2 emissions as a major concern, with 97% related to product operation. Consequently, Airbus is exploring new engine technologies.

Airbus’s longstanding presence in Portugal exceeds 50 years, with components like Lisbon and Coimbra centers and an industrial unit in Santo Tirso. Collaborations with local partners, suppliers, and clients include commercial aircraft assembly and helicopter electrical frames manufacturing. Airbus’s supplies from Portugal exceed 65 million euros annually, creating approximately 2,000 direct and 4,000 supply chain-related jobs.
