The country’s local radio stations will receive financial compensation of €14.80 per minute for airtime related to the upcoming municipal elections, scheduled for next month. This announcement was detailed in a decree published Tuesday in the Diário da República.
The document, released on the said date, states: “A compensation table is approved for the broadcast of airtime related to the campaign for the election of local government bodies on October 12, 2025, for local radio stations, amounting to €14.80 per minute. This is subject to value-added tax at the current legal rate, including the costs of access for those entitled to airtime rights to the technical means for broadcasting,” as specified in the document released Tuesday.
This decree “comes into force the day after its publication,” set to be effective tomorrow.

Municipal Elections: Over 12,800 Lists Presented by 817 Political Parties and Groups
In the municipal elections on October 12, electors will vote for the governing bodies of 308 Municipal Councils, 308 Municipal Assemblies, and 3,221 parish assemblies. Additionally, 37 parishes will select their executive through citizen assemblies, having fewer than 150 voters.
According to provisional figures released today by the National Election Commission (CNE), 817 entities have submitted their candidacies for these elections.
The noteworthy participation includes 618 groups of citizen voters, known as independent movements, alongside 181 different party coalitions and 18 political parties.
Summarized provisional figures reveal that these candidates have submitted a total of 9,750 lists for Parish Assemblies (5,499 from parties, 3,337 from coalitions, and 914 from citizen groups).
Additionally, 1,524 lists are competing for the Municipal Assemblies (921 by parties, 504 by coalitions, and 99 by citizen groups) and another 1,588 for the Municipal Councils (990 by parties, 498 by coalitions, and 100 by citizen movements).
The party Chega has submitted candidacies for 307 of the 308 Municipal Councils (99.6%), CDU for 299 (97.0%), PS (alone or in coalition) for 298 (96.7%), and PSD (alone or in coalition) for 293 (95.1%).
Regarding the 308 Municipal Assemblies, CDU is contesting 304 (98.7%), PS 297 (96.4%), PSD 293 (95.1%), and Chega 248 (80.5%).
Concerning 3,221 of the 3,258 Parish Assemblies (with 37 decided in citizen plenaries), CDU is running for 1,577 (48.9%), Chega for 1,064 (33%), PS for 2,554 (79.2%), and PSD for 2,735 (84.9%).
Taking into account the total 3,837 local government bodies contested in October’s elections, PSD (alone or in coalition) is running for 3,321 (86.5%) of them, PS (alone or in coalition) for 3,149 (82%), CDU for 2,180 (56.8%), and Chega for 1,619 (42.1%).
